Understanding is not Important

When a teacher wants to establish good relationships with his or her pupils, it very often leads to disappointment because the teacher starts thinking that they can be friends. When the student takes in the rules of the 'game', he or she starts treating the teacher as if they were friends. The teacher gets upset and sometimes angry because suddenly the teacher understands that there is no distance that should be there. The teacher is to blame then. I don't think teachers and pupils can or should be friends. Never. Teaching is a formal process and there is no ground for any friendship between a teacher and a pupil. Good formal relationships are fine but no more.

I also believe good formal relations is a necessity in a teaching process, but I doubt that understanding is not important...

First of all understanding happens at the level of one's knowledge. A good teacher is first of all responsible for shaping the mental culture of his/her pupils. If the teacher teaches a child to think and understand that thinking is a VALUE, then we will be able to avoid any generational conflicts. But teaching how to think involves a lot of knowledge, skills, attitudes. Being a teacher I must understand first and formost a pupil's mental needs, possibilities and opportunities. If a teacher knows them and can use them well, there will be no problem.

I agree that there must be a distance between teachers and pupils. It is difficult to work if you have no such distance.

I don't agree with the statement. Of course you shoud show who the leader is but why you can't become a friend. When a pupil trusts you and doesn't consider you as a strict 'old lady' who is ready to punish you for everything even for not bringing a pencil or a ruler (I've heard such claims from children), you will be able to give him/her knowledge and he/she won't reject it.

Lisa, when we talk of trust, what do we talk about? I think that pupils should trust the teacher's knowledge and power of teaching young individuals who are in search of values, attitudes, knowledge and skills. A good teacher will manage to recruit the pupil's attention and willingness to study only if the teacher respects the pupil's inner strive for mental explorations. However, the reason often lies in the fact that we miss the chance because of a big number of students who may want more attention and training. In addition. the teacher should constantly improve his or her professional competence and know more about psychology and teaching strategies. I always tell my students that I am not their friend or colleague. But when I teach, I teach them to be great personalities who pessess knowledge, skills, competences, attitudes and values that are congruent to human progress. Sorry for being so philosophical. happy

It is a very philosophical question. Without mutual understanding the process of teaching and learning will be a failure. But at the same time there must be some distance between the teacher and the student, of course. smile

I suppose that the distance between the teacher and the student depends on the student. If he is polite and intelligent he can become a friend.

I'm sure that a teacher and students can be friends. It doesn't mean that students don't respect their teacher in this situation. I've always tried to be friehds with my students. I'm proud that they trust me some secrets, share their problems with me. Sometimes I know more than their parents. Of course, there is some distance between us, I'm their older friend, more experienced one.

We have come to the point when we say that we are good advisers and trustworthy people for our students but not friends. Why are you all insisting that a student and a teacher can be freinds? Yes, they can. But is this a good model of relationships? A teacher is meant to be a certain symbol of success and self-determination, a leader who knows best what and how to do things, a moderator of learning experiences, a co-explorer in the ocean of knowledge, and ... and... and ... Only then can the teacher be called a freind. If it is important.

I should say, that some time ago I really believed that a teacher and his students must be friends, because it can make the process of studying more qualitative. But now I have another point of view. Friendship is not for education. A teacher is a person who gives knowledge, shares his experience, teaches his students the subject and brings up their personality. Students must respect their teacher, but it doesn't mean that they are friends, they are colleagues in the sphere of education. When we speak about understanding, the first thing a teacher and a student must have is the goal of enriching knowledge and developing one's personality. It's better to have some distance during the process of education and become very good friends after it, than to be friends while being a teacher and a student and fail this very process.

I think that the distance between a teacher and a student is an essential part of the teaching process, because without it it's very difficult to be objective to your students.

I think all depends on our students , their behaviour, age, upbringing. An intelligent teacher is able to become a tutor, a mother/father, a friend as well. Students can respect and love their teachers . Certainly , teachers feel all these emotions. However, there are young people who don't like to be friendly with you , because they are selfish, ill-tempered, lazy . And a teacher is unable to change the situation in this case.Studying takes a lot of energy and time. Modern children think they waste time while studying.
I am sure that a teacher shouldn't be a friend with his students , he must do his work properly to get good results and respect himself .
