I have a few questions for all of you. How can we practise pronunciation skills in a communicative way? How can we expect our students to 'communicate' while pronouncing sounds, separate words and phrases? Have you ever used such exercise and activities?

As far as I am concerned, I use poems. My students ( at elementary school) resite them in roles. Sometimes I use songs.

Hello folks!
Once we had an experience which perhaps may seem inetersting for you. Our partners from St.Louis sent us an audio file with the tongue-twisters which they had recorded themselves. blahblah At the lesson my students did their best to pronounce them perfectly. Then we recorded our version of pronunciation of those tongue-twisters and send it to our american friends for evaluation.

To improve pronunciation skills teachers can also use the teaching method in Tecnilabs. In these labs pupils can do phonetic exercises listening to different audio material: cassettes, video cassettes, CD, DVD discs and others. Any pupil can drill his pronunciation recording his voice and comparing it with the example given the teacher. Pupils can also check their intonation and pronunciation reading a text. There are other methods of teaching such as simultaneous interpreting; telephone talks (when pupils try to understand their partners with a bad quality of telephone connection); work in pairs; conferences; multiple choice tests; tests «right» or «wrong».I think these labs give a lot of oportunities to improve pronunciation skills of our pupils and have good results in practice.
Our Head Teacher would like us to have such a lab in our school in the nearest future. If you are interested in this information here the e-mail is: www@dialog.su or HTTP: www.dialog.su.

I also think that extensive repetition and immitation are good strategies for developing pronunciation skills. The problem is that we have little classroom time to do it and the mojaorty if students don't take it seriously. But we should do it regularly.

I recommend practising pronunciation at differetn lesson stages. Pronunciation drills should not be only at the start of the lesson. besides, wehn you teach pronunciation, include new class activities. A very simple one is walking and pronouncing rhymes or workds or sounds, immitating or dramatizing. If you do regularly, you students will imporve their pronunciation in five lessons.

To my mind very special attention especially at the elementary level should be given to the sounds peculiar for the English language, the ones that have no analogies in Russian. These sound should be reapeted and trained regulary. Short rymths and songs are rather good for this aim. For the sake of using communicative methods you can use reciting with different intonation - sympathising, angry, mockering.

As for me , I like chants. They have various unusual rhythms and intonations. My students learn them with pleasure because it is fun.
