Hi, there! How often do you use crosswords for teaching vocabulary skills? What kinds of crossowrds do you use? How effective are they?

I use crosswords for teaching vocabulary rather seldom. sad They are interesting for junior students, but still they are not very effective; they are often just a waste of time. I think that drilling exercises provide better results.

You may use crosswords as a home task not to waste time at the lesson. For example, the whole crossword scheme may be fully filled with letters. The task is to choose the word denoting colours and to write down these words in the excersise book. You may define the number of the chosen words. e.g. Choose seven words.

If it's a home task it will be more effective to ask students to make up their own crosswords.

I can’t agree that this tool is “a waste of time”. I believe doing crosswords is one of the activities aimed first at encouraging the learners’ interest in the process and only then revise the vocabulary. It works with all pupils regardless of their age and the language level as it is very motivating. Certainly, it is not the usual assignment for every lesson. That’s why it is never a routine and it involves everybody, creating a very positive atmosphere.

I also think that doing crossword puzzles is both effective and motivating. The motivation lies in the fact that, using appropriate techniques and strategies, it is a thinking activity that allows for revision, semantization, consolidation and communicative application of the target vocabulary items. An important part is to practise doing crosswords as class work with the students working together answering the teacher's questions, listening to additonal examples and explanations.

I think that using crossword puzzles is effective, and motivating. You can use them during a Week of English language at your school.

Margo, the crosswords that you are talking about are they all yours? Have you developed them personally? I think it will be very helpful for our community members if you post some of the examples of crosswords in our Ideas for Lessons section in the site menu.[color=blue] Another way is to send a file to my email account. I'm encouraging you to do it so that every netter can use your materials.

I can't agree that using crossword puzzles is a waste of time. Every task we give our students is aimed at something. And if we want to use a crossword puzzle, we should first of all decide when, how and what for we offer such a task. Should it necessarily be a big one?
You can use a crossword at the beginning of the lesson as a form of checking the knowledge of vocabulary. And if your students do know the words, it takes them less than 5 minutes to solve it. It would be more motivating if you make this task competitive. Becides, you can ask your students to build up crossword puzzles for their groupmates at home when you teach them to give definitions. Or you can use it as an additional task for bright students while you work with slower ones.

Crosswords is a very useful thing. There are different ones in ther workbooks by Biboletova. My students enjoy doing such tasks very much, especially if they should guess the main word or make up a phrase, a proverb from the circled letters. All crosswods have definite educational aims and motivate pupils to know and remember words. Besides, crosswords may be a creative task for our students. My children did X-mas crosswords as a creative assignment for their classmates using computer technologies and the Internet.

I also think that making and doing crosswords based on the target vocabulary and recycling it in communicative settings can be a very good start for a class project "Vocabulary Matters - Matters of Thought". The idea is very simple: a) students work in pairs or small groups of 3 or 4 students and design a few different crossword puzzles using any crossword model, b) students create brief contexts or questions or definition with the help of the teacher, c) students exchange and fill in the crossword puzzles, it can be done as whole class activity or pair work or individually; d) one crossword puzzle a lesson will be good for students.

I believe that doing crosswords is very useful for enriching the vocabulary , but being restricted in time at the lesson, I usually give this assignment for homework.

Crosswords are very useful for English learners. They activate pupils' ability to use the language. You can organize the contests between your pupils with the help of the crosswords. I'd like to show you the some kinds of crosswords.
