That's me again! Three years ago my students used e-mail to send me their homework. They sent different types of files. But I have never used e-mail to establish international ties with students in other countries. Have you ever used e-mail with your pupils so that that they could communicate with e-pals from other countries? Is it possible to find e-mail contacts and create an international e-mail exchange project? How can I start doing it? I am thinking of starting a e-mail-based project for my students. Thanks.

I am sure e-mail contacts between a pupil and a teacher do not only help realize our educational goals but also make the gap between them closer and the relations warmer. Some of my pupils do not only post the demanded material but also send lots of mini messages asking to explain, to comment if this is well-done or if it needs additional work. And to give all the answers sometimes takes so much of my “leisure” time… wacko but these pupils are so happy of having such a communication and are even eager to continue it in “Мой мир” inviting me “to be friends” their. I can’t refuse… And the list of my friends is growing… smile
P.S. I have no experience in developing international contacts using e-mail, but a year ago my students were busy with a similar project and their task was to make an international pen-friend through the ICQ system. They were a success and in their posters they presented lots of information about life in other countries, even poems composed by a boy from Finland.

I understand. Yet I would like to know how you arrange it in class, what and how you prepare. Do your students use email in the lesson or is it an alternative type of home work? How do you check it?

2 years ago I taught my students how to write e-mail correctly, their hometask was to send me a message by e-mail. Some of them did it, but some of them not. They told me that they were not allowed to use the internet. May be they were honest, may be they were cunning, I am not sure, but I undersrood that at school it is difficuil, besause many parents punish their children not alllowing them to come to the computer.
I know that some of my students have e-mail contacts with students from other countries. Sometimes they ask me this or that questions.

I think I’ve got some experience of using e-mail projects as a method of teaching English. No doubt it’s a very motivating kind of an activity especially if the students have the possibility to exchange messages with real English-speakers. My students have been taking part in e-mail projects for nearly 8 years. We found friends in the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Wales and Scotland. Not all of the projects were a success but little by little I drew up a set of rules which help me to prevent the failure.

There are several "ingredients" of a successful e-mail project:
- a persistent and enthusiastic teacher
- active and responsible students
- a reliable foreign school-partner (now before getting in touch with this or that school I study its site and acquaint myself with the main teaching strategies or maybe some peculiarities of it)
- an equipped classroom ( not less than 10 computers) sad
- and ... luck!

As a study activity, e-mail can be used with varyingg degress of control, ranging from very controlled messages on a given topic with a set of stuctures and vocabulary to use, to free correspondence with foreign peers. The most controled activities may involve students writing to their teacher or to each other to practise vocabulary and grammar issues as well as peculiarities of e-mail as a genre of writing. Teacher can either ask students to forward some of the e-mail or just print out some of the e-mails to analyse them in class.
My students have experience in developing international contacts using e-mail.

Dear Ева, can you tell us more about your experience of using e-mail for teaching English. It's interesting to know how you plan it, what kinds of activities you offer to your students, how your students interact, what foreign partners are working with you now. If you have your own presentation of article on the point, please post it on our site.
